Port Millom: an independent tidal quay on the Duddon Estuary

Port Millom provides a number of marine services to commerce and industry in the Northwest of England. Situated on the Duddon Estuary the quay is linked tidally to the Irish Sea and allows passage of goods to and from the west coast of Cumbria. Being small and independent allows us to price our facilities competitively and gives us a high degree of flexibility with our partners who use Port Millom.

What the quay offers

The tidal quay at Port Millom has a piled section of 150 metres, with room to extend, and a clean, solid base where vessels sit well and excavators and other vehicles can work freely. Our pilot buoys the inward channel when it is needed, and we can arrange a tug if a vessel requires one.

Behind the quay are around 3.2 hectares of level hardstanding, with roughly 7 hectares more that is suitable for further development. A workshop and site office, served by a large industrial generator, sit within the site.

A working port with a long history

Port Millom has served as a transport hub, a storage and materials-handling centre and a ship-breaking yard. Its location and storage space made it the choice for exporting roadstone aggregate by sea from nearby Ghyll Scaur Quarry, in barges of between 800 and 1,500 tonnes.
