Opening up tourism in the Southern & Western Lake District from the Sea
The spectacular scenery of the Lake District is known around the world and is a prime tourist destination on a global scale. The Western Lake District boasts some of the finest of this scenery along with England’s highest mountain, Sca Fell Pike and Britain’s favourite view, across Wastwater to the peaks of Wasdale Head. The Southern Lake District is home to some of Britain’s best known and most loved locations including the lakes of Windermere and Coniston Water.
While the western reaches of the region may be relatively isolated by road the facility at Port Millom gives direct access to the Lake District National Park with minimal road transfer. Port Millom provides operators with a great opportunity to open up this spectacular landscape to visitors without the requirement for long, time consuming journeys into the region.
Located as it is on the tidal estuary of the Duddon which links Port Millom to the Irish Sea the facility has serviced a number of tourism and leisure boats over recent years. Now we are looking to further develop this service alongside suitable tour operators, with a view to promoting, in particular, the green credentials of travel by sea. We at Port Millom, see green transport initiatives as a potential growth sector within the tourist industry as concerns over the environmental effect of both pollution and traffic volume continue to be important issues for operators and visitors alike. We believe that the opportunity to access this beautiful region in a more environmentally sensitive way may prove to be a strong selling point for future tourism initiatives.
If you’re a tour operator and think the way we do, we’d love to talk to you about the facilities at Port Millom and our ideas for further development in this interesting business sector.
